As 2024 draws to a close in Ecuador, we can take stock here too. And what a year it has been: sunny, warm and dry. Very dry even! Between the forest fires and unprecedentedly heavy power rationings (with outages of up to 14 hours a day), people occasionally managed to put in a few hours of work, but the country has not been very productive this year.
Nevertheless, most flower growers will not be dissatisfied. Though the year started slowly and full of worries about the Valentine's Day harvest that came far too early, things took off from mid-January, barely slowing down in the months that followed. Both Colombia and Ecuador managed to take full advantage of the wet spring in Europe and the unfavourable conditions in Kenya.
The wedding season went well, and dyed flowers have never been more popular. Even the rising air freight rates and tight capacity did not seem to be hindrances for a long time. Until November, that is, when things took a turn for the worse, and Christmas sales have also been a bit lacklustre this week.
