It has been more than 20 years since I wrote my last piece for Bloemisterij magazine. And now I’m back. For the younger readers, I will briefly introduce myself and explain what I do. The older readers will surely remember me.
My name is Sjaak Nannes. Thirty-four years ago, I moved to Kenya to grow flowers and offer advice for four months. That turned out differently though: I arrived in such a beautiful country, with so many opportunities I didn’t have in the Netherlands. You can start a business quite cheaply, for example, and the sun always shines. The temperature is generally 25 degrees during the day and 12 degrees at night. Almost everyone speaks English, which is also convenient. There are daily flights to the Netherlands, and there were more than enough employees back then, and there still are today. So, what could possibly go wrong?
Well, anything… and everything did go wrong. Things that always work well in the Netherlands tend to go the Kenyan way here, which is different. But, then again, people here usually find a solution for every problem.
