On average, Chinese people seem to be more fearful than others. While this is based on my own impression rather than scientific evidence, what is certain, is their fear of ghosts, which affects men and women alike.
Ghosts are associated with the dead returning to haunt the living and take revenge upon them, although you would think a ghost would have no reason to do so if you haven't done anything wrong. This fear shows itself during night shifts, for example, when the Chinese are practically terrified to enter the greenhouses in the dark for a final round to see if everything is in order.
They even have a “ghost month”, which starts on the first day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, usually sometime in early August. During “ghost month”, people are strongly dissuaded from getting married, buying a house, moving house or going swimming. Not that it's a good idea for the average Chinese person to go swimming anyway, as most Chinese people can barely swim, if at all.
