The bankruptcy of a major customer left a large gap at Veiling Rhein-Maas. However, the Herongen-based auction managed to fill this gap last year, ending up with almost the same turnover as the year before. The big question is when the German auction, which has been tight on space for years, will physically expand.
2024 was a good year, according to Directors Cees Hoekstra and Günther Esser of Veiling Rhein-Maas. While the number of flowers auctioned was somewhat lower, the price was higher than the year before. For garden and house plants, the supply was slightly higher and the price slightly lower. All in all, the German auction realised a product turnover of EUR 421 million, putting it at about the same level as in 2023.
The directors are satisfied with this result, especially given that the auction lost a major customer worth EUR 10 million in product turnover due to bankruptcy. This left a gap in turnover at Veiling Rhein-Maas, which the auction's mediation agency ‘Klokservice’ managed to close by selling more to existing and new customers.
