Despite Brexit and economic adversity, the United Kingdom remains an important market for the Dutch ornamentals sector. Indeed, the UK remains the biggest market after Germany. The phytosanitary certificate for cut flowers that became mandatory since Brexit has not yet been introduced, but no one is eagerly awaiting its introduction anyway.
The Dutch export value of ornamentals to the UK amounted to EUR 1.069 billion last year, 3.1% down from 2021. “This is a decline equivalent to that in other major sales markets,” observes Wesley van den Berg of Floridata, the source of these figures. Niels Dekker of exporter J. van Vliet knows the cause very well: “We were very spoilt in that market during the COVID years,” he explains the inevitable decline.
The UK nevertheless remains a key market for Dutch ornamentals exporters. The country takes second place in an overview of the top ten most important export countries, with trade across the North Sea representing 15.1% of the total market share.
