Though nowhere near Ecuador’s popular roses in terms of production area, ranunculus is gaining ground in the Andean country. While conditions are ideal, allowing for year-round cultivation, growers are nevertheless finding the crop demanding.
With 10 hectares, Rosaprima is a major ranunculus grower in Ecuador. Set against the company’s total production area of 230 hectares, its share of the flower market by volume is still relatively small. Like other growers, Rosaprima produces ranunculus all year round. COO Juan Gomez says: “We started in 2018, 2019. First by setting up a programme, then by starting production.”
Rosaprima’s story is similar to that of EcoRoses, Rosadex and SachaFlor. All of them only started growing ranunculus in recent years, initially on a small scale, for example half a hectare. Since then, the production area has increased severalfold.
