The severe earthquake in western Colombia has also struck Valle del Cauca, the coffee-growing valley that includes around 230 flower farms. Asocolflores, Colombia’s trade association for floriculture, says it has around 25 members in Valle del Cauca. Located 50 kilometres from the earthquake’s epicentre, San José del Palmar, Valle del Cauca is also home to other flower growers, alongside these 25 member companies.
Asocolflores estimates that around 230 flower farms benefit from a programme it is running in the region. Valle del Cauca is mainly home to small-scale flower growers, with most of Colombia’s larger-scale flower companies located around Bogotá and Medellín. The exception is Florius Flowers, which grows summer flowers there on a larger scale. The region also has many farms, coffee growers and vegetable growers.
